Scientific Research

The Baby Signs® Program

Scientific Research

Dr. Linda Acredolo and Dr. Susan Goodwyn, authors of the book Baby Signs: How to Talk  with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk, have conducted over two decades of academic research on the use of sign language with hearing babies, including a long-term study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Here are the highlights from that study.

Participants
More than 140 families joined the study beginning when their babies were 11 months old. Each family was randomly assigned to a signing or a non-signing group. The groups were equivalent at the beginning of the study in terms of the following characteristics: sex and birth order of the children, their tendency to vocalize or verbalize words, and the parents’ education and income levels.

Assessment
The children were assessed using standardized language measures at 11, 15, 19, 24, 30, and 36 months old. In addition, as many children as could be relocated at age 8 were assessed using the WISC-III IQ test, the most commonly used measure of children’s intelligence.

Results
Twenty-four-month-old signing babies were on average talking more like 27- or 28 month-olds, representing more than a three-month advantage over the non-signers.  In addition, the babies who signed were putting together significantly longer sentences. Thirty-six-month-old signers on average were talking like 47-month-olds, putting them almost a full year ahead of their average age-mates.  Eight-year-olds who had signed as babies scored an average of 12 points higher in IQ on the WISC-III (Mean = 114, 75th percentile) than their non-signing peers (Mean = 102, 53rd percentile).

Conclusion
The Baby Signs® Program helps children develop both language and cognitive skills.

Talk With Your Baby . . . Before Your Baby Learns to Talk!
Scooter signs CATHave you ever wondered what your baby is thinking? Or why your baby is crying? The Baby Signs® Program teaches babies to use simple, easy-to-do gestures for communicating with their parents and caregivers. These gestures or “signs” represent an item or concept, like “cat,” “eat,” or “all gone.”Using signs gives babies a way to “talk” with their parents, before they can talk. Babies can communicate about the world around them, long before they have mastered their verbal speaking skills!Babies and toddlers often use signs as a natural part of the communication process. Many babies know how to wave “bye-bye” or use a headshake to mean “no.” The Baby Signs® Program can help your baby use lots of other gestures to communicate just as easily as these more common “signs.”

The World’s Leading Sign Language Program For Hearing Babies

In 1982, child development experts Linda Acredolo, Ph.D. and Susan Goodwyn, Ph.D. discovered that babies can communicate with simple signs—even before they’re able to talk. The result: the BABY SIGNS® Program—the groundbreaking technique that has changed parenting forever.

Thanks to their research at the University of California, much of it funded by the National Institutes of Health, we know that the BABY SIGNS® Program is not only fun, but good for babies—and even helps them talk sooner.

What’s more, it’s no longer just families who are joining the BABY SIGNS® team.  Child-care providers, pediatricians, and child development professionals around the world are recognizing that the BABY SIGNS® Program is the only sign language program for hearing babies that . . .

  • Was created by child development experts,
  • Is firmly rooted in scientific research,
  • Was developed specifically for hearing children,
  • Provides flexibility to meet the needs of any family,
  • Offers a full range of exciting and effective resources.

Benefits

The Benefits of Baby Signs®

Families who use the Baby Signs® Program know first hand that there are many benefits to using signs with their babies. Using the Baby Signs® Program …

  • Reduces tears, tantrums, & frustration
  • Makes learning to talk easier
  • Boosts self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Stimulates intellectual development
  • Strengthens the parent-infant bond

Using the Baby Signs Program reduces tears, tantrums and frustration.
By the time babies are 9 to 10 months old, they are quite capable of knowing what it is they need or want. What they don’t know is how to tell us with words-which leads directly to frustration for baby and parent alike. All this changes when a baby is able to use signs. With signs like “eat,” “drink,” “hot” and “cold,” literally at their fingertips, babies can make their needs known quickly and quietly without becoming frustrated and resorting to tantrums and tears. No wonder the answer we most frequently get from parents when we ask how using the Baby Signs
Program has changed daily life is decreased frustration! Read more: Experiencing the Benefits of Baby Signs

Using the Baby Signs Program makes learning to talk easier.
Some parents may worry that encouraging their child to use sign language might slow down learning to talk. Actually, the opposite is true! Drs. Acredolo and Goodwyn’s federally funded research showed that using the Baby Signs
Program actually helps babies learn to talk. They found that 2-year-olds who had used baby sign language had significantly larger verbal vocabularies than their non-signing peers. And by the time they were three years old, the language skills of the babies who had used baby sign language were more like that of 4 years old. Babies gain a lot of language knowledge when they are able to actively engage in communication with signs-knowledge that lays a good foundation for learning to talk. And, just as a child who learns to crawl is more, rather than less, motivated to learn to walk, so also a child who learns to sign is more, rather than less, motivated to learn to talk! Read more: Experiencing the Benefits of Baby Signs

Using the Baby Signs Program boosts self-esteem and self-confidence.
What good self-esteem boils down to for any of us is the sense that we are perceived as both competent and valued in our own eyes and in the eyes of others. And that’s just what the baby sign language gives to babies. Because they can communicate effectively with their caregivers, and because their caregivers respond so positively to these communications, Baby Signs
babies develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments that lays a solid foundation for the development of their self-esteem and self-confidence. Read more: Experiencing the Benefits of Baby Signs

Using the Baby Signs Program stimulates intellectual development.
Children who had participated in Drs. Acredolo and Goodwyn’s study were revisited again when they were 8 years old. Each child was assessed using the WISC-III, a typical IQ test for children. The results were very impressive. After controlling for family income, parents’ education and a number of other factors know to influence IQ, children who had signed as babies had significantly higher IQs (an average of 114) than the children who had not signed (an average of 102). That’s a full 12 points higher!

Using the Baby Signs Program strengthens the parent-child bond.
Because babies using baby sign language are able to communicate effectively with their caregivers, the number of positive interactions goes up and the number of negative interactions goes down. In other words, when a baby and parent can truly understand each other and share what’s on their minds, they feel more connected to one another. With signs, even very young children can “tell” their caregivers they would like some milk, they saw an airplane or they heard a dog barking. They can let their caregivers know whether they are happy, sad or even afraid. Life with a Baby Signs
baby becomes a shared life and with greater sharing comes a stronger, sweeter parent-child bond. Read more: Experiencing the Benefits of Baby Signs

Over two decades of Baby Signs® research has shown that these proven benefits affect different areas of a child’s development. Using the Baby Signs® Program stimulates:

  • Social-Emotional Development
  • Language Development
  • Cognitive Development
